Phillips Smith's journey began at the University of West Georgia, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications with a focus on Convergence Journalism and a minor in American Studies. During his time at West Georgia, Phillip got involved in the university's student-based television station, UTV13. Here, he took on various roles, including Multimedia Journalist, Executive Producer, Assistant News Director, and Volunteer Coordinator, mentoring new students in the logistics of broadcasting.
In June 2017, Phillip moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he joined WTLV/WJXX as the Nightside Multimedia Photojournalist for First Coast News. His time in Jacksonville was marked by his coverage of several groundbreaking stories, including the Ahmaud Arbery shooting in Brunswick, Georgia, the Uprising Protests in Jacksonville, the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, Hurricane Irma coverage, and the Jacksonville Landing shooting. His dedication to telling impactful stories earned him respect and recognition in the field.
Phillip returned to his home state of Georgia in October 2021, joining WXIA-TV (11Alive News) in Atlanta as a Digital Platform Producer. His transition from broadcast journalism to public affairs began in May 2022 when he took on the role of Community Affairs Coordinator for the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation. His commitment to community service and engagement was further recognized when he was named the 2023-2024 Family Engagement Community Champion by Atlanta Public Schools.
Currently, Phillip serves as the Community Outreach Specialist for the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, where he continues to make a positive impact on the community. His journey from a passionate student at UTV13 to a respected professional in journalism and public affairs is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to serving the communities he loves.
