When Destiney Alston first stepped onto the University of West Georgia campus, she carried pom-poms, school spirit, and the dream of cheering on the Wolves. It was the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn’t stop her from bringing energy to the sidelines and Hanger Gym. Cheerleading was what drew her to UWG, but it wasn’t long before she discovered another passion, storytelling. As a Mass Communications major with a concentration in Convergence Journalism and a Marketing minor, Destiney traded her cheer chants for scripts, cameras, and editing software.
At WUTV, Destiney learned the art of journalism how to craft a narrative, produce a broadcast, and bring ideas to life on screen. By the time she walked across the stage in Spring 2023, she wasn’t just a graduate, she was a storyteller with a vision.
That vision grew even sharper as a Graduate Assistant at WUTV while she pursued her master’s degree in Digital and Social Media Communication. In the control room and behind the scenes, Destiney thrived. She became Technical Producer, guiding productions, supporting students, and designing creative projects. She built the UWG WUTV website in her first semester and later launched her own social media segment, Howl About It, giving students a fresh way to connect with campus news.
By Spring 2025, master’s degree in hand, Destiney had crafted a résumé as dynamic as her spirit. Today, she’s a Digital Producer at WRBL News 3 in Columbus, Georgia, where she writes web stories, curates digital content, and continues to do what she loves most, connect with people through stories.
From cheering on the Wolves to producing the news, Destiney’s journey proves that passion, creativity, and hard work can turn school spirit into a lifelong career.
